What to look for in a digital thermometer

Digital thermometer has become a must-have since 2020. Every home now needs to have at least one as a way to keep everyone’s symptoms in check. As a result, we also see so many digital thermometers being sold everywhere, both offline and online.

The market offers a broad range of digital thermometers from stationary models with no-frills support to wireless models with impressive features. In fact, the sheer number of options available today can be overwhelming for most people. And this is where we come in – we aim to help you find the best option for your needs easily and quickly right at the comfort of your home.

Important Digital Thermometer Features

All digital thermometers come with a probe or tip that can be inserted into whatever it is you are measuring the temperature of. The tips range from very thin, narrow probes to fairly wide and flat ones. There’s something for everything, but here we’ll go over some pros and cons of each type to help you pick what would work best for your application.

Thin probe  – This type is the narrowest in width and can easily go in between two closely placed objects. If you are looking for accurate measurement of say, your baby’s temperature without having to wake them up (which could confuse them), possibly causing them distress, this would be your best choice. Thin probes are also perfect if you need to measure moisture levels in various applications like growing or cheese making since they won’t leave any residue behind once removed.

Wide probe – This one is good when measuring large areas like what you’d get with a baby back, bath water or food items like pot roast that’ll give you more precise measurements. And it is also helpful if you plan on taking multiple measurements over the same surface area.

Flat probe –  This type is a little more versatile as it can be used to measure your baby’s temperature without waking them up. Also, they can be placed right under the tongue for fast accurate results which you’ll need when your child is seriously fussy and very much unwilling to sit still.

Digital thermometers are also mercury-free  and require a button cell to work. This means that you will not have to deal with toxic mercury spilling or breaking when it’s time for a battery replacement. And this is a good thing since mercury thermometers are no longer available in most parts of the country because of safety concerns.

The display is also one thing that you get to enjoy with digital thermometers.  No more wading through complicated readings trying to find out what your thermometer is telling you. You can now easily see if it’s saying 99°F or 100°F and then take the proper action like calling a doctor if necessary.

Also, most digital thermometers come with automatic shut-off for added convenience and safety. No more wondering about the possibility of leaving it on accidentally after use which could drain those button cell batteries really fast. Automatic ensures that once done, your device gets locked up to save energy during non-use times before powering off automatically as well.

Now, on to one of the most important features – accuracy. You just can’t take your chances with this one as you need your thermometer to be accurate all the time especially if you’re using it at home to check the temperature of say, your baby who isn’t feeling well, or water where they’ll be bathing soon, etcetera. So look out for models which come with multiple measurement modes and adjustable emissivity settings so you can get the most accurate results possible.

Don’t forget to check out the speed of response – this will tell you how fast the device is at taking readings on whatever it is you are measuring. The faster, the better as that means your little one won’t have to wait for their fever’s gone before they can go back to sleep or play with their toys.

With all these options available, feel free to make a list of the features that are important for you to check off before making a purchase. In addition, do remember that digital thermometers aren’t exactly cheap so make sure you know what you need from one before purchasing or this could lead to buyer’s remorse or worse – giving an ill-suited product a good review just because it was expensive and well marketed.
